Acclimation Process for Discus on Arrival
1. Prepare for Light Adjustment: Upon opening the box, keep in mind that your discus have been in the dark for 24-48 hours. Gently acclimate them to the light by allowing them to adjust gradually. This helps minimize stress and supports a smooth transition.
2. Acclimation and Transfer:
Method 1: Floating the Bags
- Float the sealed bags in your tank for 20 minutes to help the fish acclimate to your tank's temperature.
- Carefully cut open the bag and use your hands to gently place the fish into your tank. If you're unsure, you can use a net. **Please do not pour the bag water into your tank; simply discard it.
Method 2: Using a Styrofoam Box
- Pour water from your tank into the Styrofoam box to help the fish adjust to your tank's temperature and water conditions.
- Cut the bag and gently pour the fish into the Styrofoam box, ensuring there is ample water for them to swim comfortably.
- Gradually add more water from your tank into the Styrofoam box to acclimate the fish to your tank’s water parameters.
- Gently place the fish from the Styrofoam box into your tank using your hands. If needed, a net can be used for extra care. **Please do not pour the water from the Styrofoam box into your tank; discard it.**
3. Lights Off for 24 Hours: Keep the lights off for the first 24 hours to reduce stress and allow your discus to acclimate. Adding aquarium salt (1 tablespoon per 10 gallons) during this period can support their adjustment.
4. First Water Change and Feeding: After 24 hours, perform a water change and begin feeding your fish. Be patient, as discus may take a few days to start eating regularly.
5. Monitor Behavior: It’s normal for discus to rest or lay low initially. Increase aeration and maintain the recommended salt levels if needed to help them settle in.
6. Quarantine Any New Fish: To ensure the health of your aquarium, quarantine new arrivals separately for 3-5 weeks before introducing them to your main tank. This practice helps prevent the spread of potential diseases.
By following these steps, you can help your discus acclimate smoothly and comfortably to their new home.
